From the 1st of January 2018, Fjord1 will be operating two new battery ferries on E39 Anda –Lote on the west coast of Norway. This will be the first ferry connection in Norway where the Norwegian Road Administration requires use of zero-emission technology. The new ferries are an important step towards more environmental friendly public transportation.
Although the Road Administration has allowed for part hybrid operation, using biodiesel or biogas on one of the ferries, Fjord1 is planning for full electric operation of both ferries.
Batteries:
Fast charging of the batteries is made through fully automatic charging stations at the quaysides during unloading/loading of cars and passengers.
The batteries will have sufficient capacity for the ferries to continue operation for several hours without charging.
Power consumption:
Hull shape, propellers, heating and ventilation system etc. optimized for lowest possible power consumption. Automatic mooring system will enable the ship to maintain position alongside the quay without use of thrusters.
During operation at Anda – Lote, the estimated gross energy use will be less than 30% of the normal consumption of a conventional ferry of this size powered by diesel engines.
Extensive effort has been made in order to reduce the ferries’ power consumption. The annual power consumption for the two battery ferries, combined, is equivalent to 200 residential houses only.
Fully electric / plug-in hybrid:
Fjord1 is preparing for full electric operation of both ferries on the Anda – Lote crossing. However, the ferries will also be equipped with biodiesel generators, which open for potential operation as plug-in hybrids on other fjord crossings in the future.
